The University of Akron is a public research university in Ohio. Together, we built the recruitment ecosystem that won Digital Innovation of the Year, Student Recruitment, at The PIEoneer Awards 2026.

Challenges

Challenges

Recruiting in Southeast Asia is not a media-buying exercise. Students compare universities across borders, in their own language and on their own timeline, and much of the decision happens before admissions ever speaks to them.

Fragmented Journeys

Ads, landing pages, emails and admissions follow-up usually run as separate activities. Students fall through the gaps between them, and the attention the campaign paid for is lost before it becomes a conversation.

Delayed Follow-Up

Interest is highest in the minutes after a student submits a form. A callback queue that takes days means the student has already moved on to the next university on their list.

Limited Capacity Across Time Zones

A small admissions team in Ohio cannot personally answer every enquiry from Vietnam and Indonesia in real time, in the right language, while still focusing on the students most likely to apply.

Background

Background

The University of Akron partnered with Platty to grow its presence in Vietnam and Indonesia, two markets where many prospective students had limited familiarity with the institution.

The brief went beyond awareness. Buying attention was only the beginning; the real opportunity was to connect everything that came after it, from the first impression to a qualified conversation with the university.

The result was a multichannel recruitment ecosystem combining localised creative, Meta and Google advertising, PR, a dedicated Southeast Asia microsite, an online student community, email nurture and Avexa, Platty's AI voice and messaging agent.

The work was recognised as Digital Innovation of the Year, Student Recruitment, at The PIEoneer Awards 2026.

Our Approach

Our Approach

Localised Campaigns, Not Translations

Five campaigns per country, shaped around career growth, academic reputation, technical specialisation and belonging. Localised Meta campaigns, intent-led Google search and PR made Akron visible in the places Vietnamese and Indonesian students already explore.

A Place to Explore and Belong

A conversion-focused Southeast Asia microsite put programme information, student visa guidance and the enquiry form within two pages. A dedicated online community, with a live feed, groups, forums and events, gave students somewhere to keep exploring before taking action.

Capture Intent, Then Nurture It

A short path to the form connected every new enquiry to the CRM and triggered a localised seven-email nurture flow. Live reporting tracked each stage so the journey could be refined throughout the campaign.

AI Qualification and Handover

Avexa, Platty's proprietary voice and messaging agent, contacted leads as they arrived, answered questions and qualified intent, then continued the conversation on WhatsApp or SMS. Qualified students were booked directly into the university's calendar, with reminders up to the meeting and a clear handover to admissions.

Results

Results

3,705 Leads Generated The recruitment ecosystem turned campaign attention into 3,705 student leads, with a reported landing-page conversion rate of 6.58%.

Deeper Engagement in the Community Students viewed 3.7 pages per session in the online community, compared with 1.5 on the microsite, 147% more depth for the destination built to keep them exploring.

Stronger Response at the First Touchpoints The first two nurture emails reached a 1.18% click rate, compared with 0.49% across the complete flow, 141% higher. Responding while interest is highest matters.

What the Work Taught Us The handover matters as much as the first click. WhatsApp proved more effective than phone calls for these audiences, and repeated reminders and guidance up to the meeting were important for attendance.

The University of Akron gained more than a campaign: a connected recruitment infrastructure, including the microsite, community, reporting and AI qualification, recognised by the international education sector with a PIEoneer Award.

Results

Avexa beat the usual higher-ed nurture numbers by a wide margin.

WhatsApp drip campaigns normally sit at 10–15% response and email nurture at 2–5%. This campaign hit 53%.
